The Blessing Blanket

By Blue Eyed Buffalo Inc. | Made in Okotoks

Raise your hand if you still have your baby blanket. The Blessing Blanket is more than just a blanket — it’s a keepsake that honours a heartfelt moment in time. The concept of the Blessing Blanket came from the family trio behind Blue Eyed Buffalo: husband-and-wife Bruce MacDonald and Debrah Opsahl-MacDonald, and their daughter Madison MacDonald. Bruce’s father was a Métis Elder, and Debrah’s mother would sew blankets for new babies in the family with patterns passed down from her aunt. The baby would be swaddled in the blanket, which symbolized a blessing, and once they outgrew it, they would keep the blanket as a keepsake. Opsahl-MacDonald used this concept to create four unique designs; the outside of the blanket tells a visual story through art, while the inside has narrative blessings written across it. Each handmade blanket is crafted with love and intent; it’s a treasure just as special as your bundle of joy. In addition to blueeyedbuffalo.ca, The Blessing Blankets are available at Rocky Mountain Flannel Company, which has four locations (two in Banff, one in Lake Louise and one in Jasper).
